According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers responded at approximately 8:40 p.m. Monday to the area of Leonard Avenue and Rose Avenue after receiving reports of a shooting. They found Burley suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, he was transported to Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:02 p.m.
Investigators allege that the incident began after Shawn Michael Maxwell confronted Burley over someone performing motorcycle wheelies in the roadway. Police say the encounter escalated into a physical altercation before Burley was shot. Maxwell was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. The case remains subject to the judicial process.
Friends and community members have remembered Burley as a respected businessman involved in the trucking and auto body industries. Many said he was passionate about helping others find employment and encouraging people to build better futures. Just weeks before his death, he had spoken publicly about concerns over violence in his neighborhood following another fatal shooting nearby.
